Why We Started Innovative Outsourcing
After more than 24 years in business, we thought it would be worth going back and asking: why did we start Innovative Outsourcing in the first place? What was the original mission — and are we still living it?
The answer turned out to be simpler than I expected.
It Started When I Left Delta
I had a full-time job at Delta Airlines, and I decided to stay home with my son Matt.
What I discovered pretty quickly was that I genuinely missed working. I also felt strongly that being home with him was where I was supposed to be. Both things were true at once, which is a position a lot of people find themselves in and don't know what to do about.
So I started working part-time for a few companies.
The Thing I Noticed
Once I was doing that work, I realized something: this was a tremendous deal for the companies, too. They were paying a modest amount and getting a high level of service — experience they couldn't have afforded at 40 hours a week.
And I thought: this could be a business.
So I went to the playground. Genuinely. I found friends there who were CPAs and attorneys — highly credentialed people who had stepped back from full-time work — and asked whether they'd want to do some part-time work.
The Perfect Marriage
What we found was that both sides wanted this badly.
The professionals wanted meaningful work that fit around their lives. And small businesses that needed serious skill but couldn't afford it full-time were thrilled to have a controller for 10 hours a week, or an HR person for 20.
Nobody was connecting those two groups. So we did, and Innovative Outsourcing was born 24 years ago.
What's Happened Since
We've helped over a thousand professionals find positions that let them balance work and family life.
And we still exist for exactly that reason: to create work-life balance for people. That's not a line we added later to sound good — it's the thing the company was built on.
What I love is that it has never been one-sided. It helps the individuals who get those jobs, and it helps the companies enormously, because they get access to real talent at a rate they can actually afford.
Still True Today
Twenty-four years on, that's still why we exist, and I'm genuinely glad it remains our mission.
Every business has an origin story. I think it's worth occasionally going back to yours and asking whether you're still doing what you set out to do.
